So for the last two Minnesota Music Posts, I have lost the entire text of my entry when I have uploaded the song. I guess I need to learn how to VOX again.
I wasn't going to select Trampled by Turtle's "Duluth" as my Minnesota Music song of the week. However, downloading "Nobody Else" from my library was taking forever. So I resorted to posting via Amazon -- but heck, the selection is my love Duluth.
My post accompanying the song was a bout the weather and us Duluthians. As far as I am concerned, our summer started August 10th. I LOVE THE HEAT!!! But it is slightly above average temps, so Duluthins complain. Last week we complained about the rain for Bayfront Blues Fest. For weeks before that we complained about the cold. Our local news conglomerate did a special weather segment last night , saying that yes, until this week our weather has been below average; this week it is slightly above average. I'm a transplant; bring on the heat.
Yet whether your lifetime resident or short-term transplant, we Duluthians will always complain about the weather. Although with my 20 + transplant-years experience, lifers like to say they're "commenting" about the weather.
I have a costume conundrum. It is one month (minus a day) before Geek Prom. I want to be Princess Leia going to the prom. No, I do not want to go in a Princess Leia costume. I have a pair of awesome buns (that I put on my head) which were made for me a couple years ago when I was a Princess Leia PEZ dispenser for Halloween ( And again was a PL PEZ at the Minnesota PEZ Convention and won third place in a costume contest).
But the PEZ costume is very difficult to move in. So difficult, in fact, that at a Halloween party a couple years ago I asked Geek Prom founder to move my car out of a tight spot. This was a favor gone bad, as he was equally impaired by alcohol as I was mobility impaired; end result was a scratched car. Never let your friends drink & drive. Or drive in PEZ costumes.
Anyway, I don't want to be an imperfect replica of the movie Star Wars Princess Leia and nor do I want to be a mobility impaired PEZ dispenser. I want to be Leia going to the prom. I'm pretty sure they didn't have proms a "Long time ago in a galaxy far, far away".
Or maybe the 80s, when I didn't go to the prom in high school, suffices as a long time ago, but now is the galaxy where a girl with cinnamon rolls on her head goes to the prom.
Dress suggestions are welcomed.
- I met Vice President Walter F. Mondale.
- Actually, I co-arranged a lunch/lecture event in his honor.
- The University's Chancellor introduced me to Mondale.
- We packed the venue (holds 370), the overflow room (90) and the upper and bottom lobby (live-cast monitors in place).
- Event was covered by all the local media.
- Mondale was pleased, my boss was pleased, the chancellor was pleased, I'm pleased and still standing.
- There were few mishaps.
- Lp's being moved-up to fifth-grade reading; he's in third grade.
- I'm an event adrenaline junkie; today I got a good fix and a big high.
- It was not so cold.
- I'm not so stressed.
- My son's reading teacher called him "a rock star"
- I am a rock star.
- It's cold. Very Cold. Currently -11/ Wind Chill -34
- I'm co-in-charge of lecture by a former vice president
- The event is tomorrow
- School has been closed for two days
- Had to work from home today
- I'm sick; sore throat, feverish, achey bones
- How do you dress for a former vice president?
- I have another big lecture next week
- The handle on my "work" purse broke
- My other purse choices are one made out candy wrappers or another made out of recycled fabric
- There's a stain on my suit jacket
- I don't want to wear the suit jacket and I want to use my candy wrapper purse
- It will be cold again tomorrow. many may skip the vice president's lecture
- Small attendance will make me sad. Large attendance will cause more stress.
- I hope I feel better tomorrow and don't faint near the vice president.
- Did I mention that it's friggen cold?
Here are tracks 2 and 3 from my Mix Tape, "Swing Your Rowley":
2). “Don’t Stop Belivin’ – Petra Haden- Guilt by Association
“Guilt by Association” is a whole album of guilty pleasures re-sung by un or little-known indie darlings. When I was mentally putting the play list together, I heard this song on Jodi's Vox and couldn’t stop listening to it.
3). “School Uniform”- The Pipettes- We are the Pipettes
I heard about The Pipettes on another Vox blog, We ♥ Music. This song was a summer staple.
I did not intend to not blog for so long. It began with a lack of time/initiative/want/need to write, than became one of those "you know it will make you happy but you put off anyway"choices - like a new haircut, working out, or finishing a long forgotten thesis.
I cannot commit to posting daily, weekly or monthly because I'm very good at rebelling against self-established habit changes. All I do know is that it's five minuets until Christmas, which probably means a good five to six (maybe even 7) hours before the Little Pirate awakes and Christmas craziness begins. And Vox said" Welcome Back" ; I hope I still have neighbors who feel the same.
I hope you all are having a happy holiday season!
It's been nearly two months since I've bloged. I've missed you Vox-- my you have changed. You have funky new drop downs (took me a while to find "compose"). And Ira Glass? Who knew you were Voxer? I've missed you Voxers. Not only have I not blogged, but I also have not read your blogs. I'm looking forward to some catching up.
I wish I could tell you some exciting story about why I have been absent, but there isn't one. Just the physicall life overtaking this inner life. The little pirate had several more bouts of the mystery illness, which they finally labeled "tonsilitis" and yanked his tonsils out. That was quite the stressful ordeal with a long recovery, but both LP and I are doing fine now. He has gone more than two weeks without a fever, which is the longest he has been fever-free since February.
Then there was Geek Prom -- an annual event for which I serve on the committee. Yes, I am a Geek Prom Committee Member. I will allow that great event its own post later.
The main job is going well & the freelance job is pretty much finished. Now I'm looking forward to some sunny Duluth summer days on the shores of Lake Superior.
