(Can't get my pictures from last weekend uploaded)
Little pirate and I went down to the cities last weekend. Dropped LP off at his dad's. I stayed at my good friends' loft surrounded by art. Ate a fabulous mock chicken curry peanut sauce concoction at at Taste of Thialnd. Hosts and I met-up later with my wonderful college friend Tod, who took us to Uncommon Grounds for coffee.
In college, Tod was my musical muse. We don't necessarily have the same tastes, but Tod could always (and still can) introduce me to bands that are not an obvious fit. For instance, until recently I thought I hated Interpol. If I had been in touch with Tod on a regular basis, he would have set me straight. He's like the musical equivalent of the V-8 slap.
On Sunday, we went to Cheapo Records(drool...). where I bought a bunch of needed albums (used) including
this
I love M.I.A.! She's the techno-hip-hop-pop goddess daughter of a Sri Lankan militant activist. Her second album, Kala, has been on my wish list for a while, but I picked up her first album, Arular, used.
Yea! I've captured the Runaway Wind!
Hey all you listeners. I've got a nasty bout of the flu, so I"m writing from my bed, underneath the blankies, with a box of unused tissue and a few used ones beside me.
Today's Minnesota Music Friday tune is inspired by Voxer Dan!!!, who put a different Mason Jennings song on his blog. I love Mason Jennings. I've seen him live several times, but the first time is still the most memorable. It was at the Tap Room in Duluth on my 30th Birthday, and the place was practically empty except for me & my friends. That's where I first heard this song named for, but not about, my town.
This week has kicked my ass. I'm overtired from being overworked and over "play"ed. But since a lovely VOXer has been promoting Minnesota Music Fridays, I want to & must upload today's tune before I sleep. I could write on & on about The Suburbs and how they shaped my adolescence, but unfortunately I can't tonight. Perhaps I will add to this post at a later date.
For now, here's a song suited to my mood off the Viva! Suburbs! album, which is a recording of their 1993 reunion show at First Ave. I was fortunate enough to be at this show; actually I recollect two shows and believe I was at both. Enjoy!
For the last five years, local musician/ Shaky Ray owner & writer Mark Lindquist has held an after-christmas Bad Sweater Party at Pizza Luce. I had never been, so I was very excited to learn that this year it would take place on the weekend that Little Pirate would be at his Dad's.
Unfortunately, there was a lot happening last evening and I missed all the really bad sweaters. First, Jerree, Crystal & I met-up at the Pap Smear (a moniker a college friend gave to the Tap Room; He said "although I never had one, I suspect that entering the Tap Room is as pleasant as having a pap smear") to see the Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank and the White Iron Band. I like both bands, so I'm glad I went to see them live. Still, it was rather depressing to get to Luce after midnight and find that most of the bad sweater-wearers had left the building.
But I did get a sweet picture of Jerree Small and Al Sparhawk in their not-so-bad sweaters. Jerree commented that Al's sweater looked like a sock monnkey.
Here's a full pic of sock-monkey sweater:
Since it's the last Friday of 2006, I'm thinking that this would be a good time to retire my "Minnesota Music Friday" posts. It's not that I'll ever run out of music to post, because our state holds a plethora of great tunes just waiting to be uploaded, shared and discovered by others.
It's more like I feel the posts are not accomplishing all that I hoped. The purpose of Minnesota Music Fridays is to share great tunes by known and unknown Minnesotans in the hope that others would discover, or simply enjoy, the great, underappreciated music from this region. My hope was that people would comment --- we would discuss the songs & their artists.
Instead I feel like I'm sending the tunes into dead air. If you'd like me to keep sharing my state's great songs, please comment. Otherwise, Minnesota Music Fridays will close with a tune by The State Champs:
P.S. This won't be the end of posting music I like; it just won't be a regular blog feature.
Last weekend, there was an abundance of live music in Duluth to raise funds for a very sick little girl, Peal Swanson:
Twenty-four acts contributed songs for the young & old on the album Treasure Chest. The album is delightful, all proceeds go to Pearl, and you should buy it for yourself and as a gift for other music lovers.
Here's Little Black Books singing one of my childhood favorites, Camp Grenada:
Sorry about last Friday; Minnesota Music Friday was closed for the holiday. Which brings me to today's song, "Holiday" by The Hopefuls. This band was formerly The Olympic Hopefuls until they recieved a nasty letter from the United States Olympic Comittee, which made for a tale that even MTV told.
You can see The Hopefuls singing "Holiday" live on Perfect Duluth Day; I'm posting the video as a part of the PDD Blogathon.
