Here's track 4&5 on the "Swing your Rowley: Guilty Pleasures" mix tape.
4). “Can’t Hardly Wait”- The Replacements- Pleased to Meet Me
For those of you who don’t already know, I’m a huge Replacements fan. I’ve put this song on countless mix tapes since the 90s; It’s probably my favorite Replacements song and makes me happy whenever and whatever. The Replacements are my go-to band; their music brought me up through my teens, into my twenties, and I still look to them to say & play what I’m feeling currently (original wrote today ; didn't like the assonance). I often wonder who I would have been without their music.
5).” Impossible Germany” – Wilco- Sky Blue Sky
This whole album rocked my fall; Wilco’s show in Bayfront was superb. I still endlessly repeat this song.
Here are tracks 2 and 3 from my Mix Tape, "Swing Your Rowley":
2). “Don’t Stop Belivin’ – Petra Haden- Guilt by Association
“Guilt by Association” is a whole album of guilty pleasures re-sung by un or little-known indie darlings. When I was mentally putting the play list together, I heard this song on Jodi's Vox and couldn’t stop listening to it.
3). “School Uniform”- The Pipettes- We are the Pipettes
I heard about The Pipettes on another Vox blog, We ♥ Music. This song was a summer staple.
My brother and sister played a big role in my musical upbringing and I have fond memories of many of the songs I heard through them. When I was five, I would ask my sister to play The Beatles "Rocky Raccoon" over and over again. I really didn't listen to much else of the "White Album" , instead just asking her to drop the needle on Rocky. When the song finished, she would pick the needle up and return it to the beginning of the track knowing that if she didn't I was apt to do it myself and might scratch her treasured LP.
When I first played the White Album for my son when he was four or five, he also became infatuated with the song and would ask me to play it again. I'm not sure what about the song that hooked him, but I always imagined this raccoon dressed up in western gear fighting over a girl.
December was my
month to send musical contributions through a mix tape club. So I
pulled an all- nighter on December 29th and delivered some of
the mix tapes to friends at brunch the next day.
Since my New Year's resolution is to post at least once a week, I will post a song a week for you Voxers, beginning with the mix tape's concept and the first song.
Guilty Pleasures is a BBC radio show highlighting all those songs you secretly adore. Its host is U.K radio and T.V. personality Sean Rowley he’s the guy on the cover of Oasis’ “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory” and the show has sparked a whole “Guilty Pleasures” movement in Britain. I found out about the radio program/movement when I Googled “Rowley” (my surname) and was brought to a mix tape club page with a guilty pleasure compilation called "Swing Your Rowley" by DJ Frankie Pigeon.
Now here's the first of my musical indulgences:
1). “Mix Tape” – Katie Monster and Princeton-
Avenue Q
I’ve wanted to use this song as a Mix Tape first track FOR-EV-AR! One of my guilty pleasures is musicals; LOVE them! Little Pirate and I dance around the house to “Into the Woods” and “Wicked”. The N.Y. cast recording of Avenue Q is one my faves – and one my son will not listen to until he’s a teenager.
